Why Does One Electrical Fault Turn Off Half the House?
One electrical fault can turn off several parts of a home when multiple circuits share the same RCD safety device. If the RCD detects a problem on any one of those circuits, it disconnects the entire group, including circuits that are otherwise working correctly.
The size of the outage does not necessarily reflect the size of the fault. It often reflects how the switchboard’s protection has been arranged.
The difference between a circuit breaker and an RCD
A circuit breaker protects an individual circuit against excessive current caused by an overload or short circuit. When it operates, only that circuit will usually turn off.
An RCD performs a different job. It monitors the electricity flowing through one or more circuits and looks for an imbalance that may indicate current is escaping to earth. This could be caused by a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, or another electrical problem.
If several circuit breakers sit beneath one shared RCD, a fault on any of those circuits can cause the RCD to disconnect all of them at once.
That is why a problem with an outdoor socket might also turn off bedroom lights, the fridge, internet equipment, or other seemingly unrelated parts of the home.
Why are circuits grouped together?
Shared RCD arrangements have commonly been used to provide safety protection across several circuits without installing a separate RCD for each one.
A switchboard might divide the home into two groups. If one RCD trips, only the circuits connected to that group are lost, while the remaining circuits continue operating. This is generally better than having the entire home connected through one device, but it can still create considerable disruption.
The way those circuits are grouped matters. If the fridge, lighting, heating controls, and several socket circuits all share one RCD, a single fault can affect a large and inconvenient portion of the home.
The arrangement may still provide safety protection, but its fault isolation can be limited.
The visible fault may not be the only contributor
Sometimes there is one clear cause, such as a damaged appliance or water entering an outdoor fitting. In other situations, several appliances may each contribute a small amount of background leakage.
Individually, none of those appliances may be enough to operate the RCD. Together, however, their combined leakage may approach the device’s operating threshold. One additional appliance or a small deterioration in wiring condition can then cause the whole group to trip.
This is one reason repeated RCD operation should be properly investigated rather than treated as a nuisance. Resetting the device may restore power temporarily, but it does not explain why it operated.
If an RCD trips again after being reset, or there are signs of heat, damage, moisture, or a burning smell, leave the affected circuits off and arrange for an electrician to investigate.
How individual RCBO protection can help
An RCBO combines circuit-breaker protection and RCD protection within one device. When each circuit has its own RCBO, an electrical fault will generally disconnect only the affected circuit.
This can provide:
Better fault isolation
Less disruption to the rest of the home
Clearer identification of the affected circuit
Less accumulated leakage across groups of circuits
A more structured protection layout
Individual RCBO protection does not prevent faults from occurring, but it can help contain their effect.
Whether it is appropriate depends on the switchboard’s condition, available space, existing wiring, circuit arrangement, and the protection already installed. A switchboard should be understood as a complete electrical foundation, not simply as a row of devices to be replaced.
Does shared protection mean the switchboard is unsafe?
Not necessarily. A shared RCD may still be providing important safety protection.
The more useful questions are whether the devices are appropriate, whether they operate correctly, how the circuits are distributed, and whether a fault can be isolated without unnecessarily affecting the rest of the home.
For an older Dunedin home, the existing arrangement may also reflect several stages of electrical work completed over time. Poor labelling, crowded equipment, shared neutrals, or unclear circuit groupings can make fault finding and future improvements more difficult.
When is an electrical review worthwhile?
It is worth getting advice when:
Several circuits regularly turn off together
An RCD will not reset or trips repeatedly
The cause changes or is difficult to identify
Circuit labels are missing or inaccurate
Essential appliances share protection with outdoor circuits
You are planning renovations, heating, induction cooking, solar, or EV charging
You want better separation between circuits
A proper assessment can establish whether the problem requires a simple repair, appliance investigation, circuit redistribution, or wider protection modernisation.
