Does an Induction Cooktop Mean I Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

Not necessarily. An induction cooktop will usually require a suitable dedicated circuit, but it does not automatically mean the entire switchboard must be replaced.

The answer depends on the cooktop, the capacity and condition of the existing electrical system, the space available in the switchboard, and what else the home needs to support.

Why an induction cooktop changes the conversation

Induction cooking can place considerably more demand on an electrical system than a standard plug-in appliance. If you are replacing a gas cooktop, the home may not currently have a circuit designed for that level of electrical demand.

This becomes particularly relevant when the cooktop is part of a wider move towards an all-electric home. An induction cooktop may be added alongside heat pumps, electric hot water, an EV charger, solar or future renovation work.

Each upgrade might be manageable on its own. The more useful question is whether the electrical foundation can support them together.

The cooktop may only need a new circuit

In many homes, the appropriate solution is a properly designed dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the new cooktop.

The electrician will need to consider:

  • The connection requirements specified by the cooktop manufacturer

  • The proposed cable route and suitable cable size

  • The protective device required for the circuit

  • The switchboard space available

  • The existing and anticipated demand across the home

Some induction cooktops also allow their maximum power demand to be configured. Where the manufacturer permits it, this can sometimes help the cooktop work within the capacity available. However, the setting still needs to suit the home, the circuit design and the way the cooktop will be used.

Switchboard capacity and supply capacity are different

A switchboard can run out of physical space even when the home still has enough electrical capacity. Conversely, a switchboard may have spare positions while the home’s overall supply is becoming constrained.

This distinction matters.

Installing a larger switchboard can provide room for modern circuit protection and future circuits, but it does not automatically increase the amount of power available to the property. If the incoming supply is the limiting factor, that may require a different solution.

A proper assessment should consider the home’s likely maximum demand rather than simply adding together the maximum rating of every appliance. This helps determine whether the induction cooktop can be added as planned, whether load management could help, or whether wider work should be considered.

Available space and protection matter

Even when the home has enough capacity, the existing switchboard must have a suitable place for the new circuit and its protection.

A modern RCBO may allow the cooktop circuit to have its own combined overload, short-circuit and residual-current protection. Keeping protection separated by circuit can also reduce the number of unrelated areas affected if one circuit develops a fault.

A switchboard upgrade may be worth considering if the existing board:

  • Is already crowded

  • Uses older rewireable fuses

  • Has limited or outdated RCD protection

  • Contains several generations of additions

  • Is poorly labelled

  • Shows deterioration or previous heat damage

  • Has no practical room for future circuits

The induction cooktop may not be the reason the board needs attention. It may simply be the project that brings an existing constraint into view.

Does induction mean the home needs three-phase power?

Not automatically. Many induction cooktops can operate successfully on a suitable single-phase supply, depending on the model, circuit design and other electrical demand in the home.

Three-phase power may become relevant for larger cooktops or homes combining several substantial electrical loads. However, it should be considered as part of the whole-home demand assessment, not assumed from the cooktop alone.

Checking this before choosing the appliance can be valuable. It allows the electrical requirements to inform the kitchen design while there is still time to adjust the cooktop selection, cable route or wider electrical plan.

When should the switchboard be reviewed?

It is sensible to arrange an electrical review before the kitchen work begins if:

  • You are changing from gas to induction

  • The switchboard is older, crowded or unclear

  • There is no obvious spare position for the new circuit

  • You are also planning an EV charger, electric hot water or additional heating

  • The home is being renovated or moved towards all-electric living

  • You want to avoid opening finished walls or cabinetry later

For older Dunedin homes, early investigation can be especially helpful because the visible switchboard does not always tell the full story about existing cable routes, previous alterations or available capacity.

An induction cooktop does not automatically require a switchboard upgrade. Sometimes a new dedicated circuit is all that is needed. In other homes, the cooktop reveals limited space, outdated protection, poor condition or wider capacity constraints that are better addressed first.
