What is a mains or supply upgrade?

The mains are the conductors that carry electricity from the property's point of supply to the main switchboard. A supply upgrade is a broader term that can include increasing the available capacity, replacing those conductors, changing the service protection, moving from single-phase to three-phase power, or arranging changes on the electricity network side of the connection.

This is different from modernising the switchboard. A switchboard can be replaced while the existing mains remain suitable. Equally, a modern-looking switchboard does not prove that the mains or network connection can support every future addition.

When planned demand exceeds the existing foundation

Many homes were designed before today's combination of induction cooking, multiple heat pumps, EV charging, spas, workshops, solar, batteries, and additional dwellings became common.

One new appliance does not necessarily mean the supply must be upgraded. What matters is the likely combined demand when several loads operate at the same time, along with the rating and condition of the existing connection.

An upgrade may be worth investigating if you are planning:

a fast or high-capacity EV charger

a full change from gas appliances to electric

several large heat pumps or electric heating loads

a spa, pool heating, sauna, or substantial workshop equipment

When the existing supply appears constrained

Sometimes the home already gives signs that its electrical foundation needs attention. Main protection operating under normal household use, noticeable voltage drop, or lights dimming when a large appliance starts can justify further investigation.

These symptoms do not confirm that a larger supply is the answer. A deteriorated connection, loose termination, faulty appliance, poor circuit design, or another electrical issue can look similar. The cause should be tested before any upgrade is proposed.

When the mains are unsuitable or in poor condition

Capacity is only part of the picture. The mains also need to be suitable for their protective device, installation method, length, and environment.

Older conductors, damaged insulation, deterioration at connection points, an undersized cable, or an impractical cable route may make replacement appropriate. Renovations that involve trenching, wall linings, meter relocation, or switchboard modernisation can also create a sensible opportunity to complete mains work once and prepare the home properly.

When three-phase power is being considered

Three-phase power can provide more capacity and allow large loads to be distributed more evenly, but it is not automatically better for every home. Many households can support their plans on a well-designed single-phase supply.

The decision depends on the equipment being installed, the home's calculated demand, the existing mains, and what the local network can provide. Moving to three-phase may involve the mains, metering, switchboard, service protection, and network connection, so it should be considered as a coordinated project rather than an isolated change.

Could an upgrade be avoided?

Sometimes. Smart EV charging, dynamic load management, controlled hot water, sensible appliance selection, or sequencing large loads can keep peak demand within the home's available capacity.

That does not mean simply limiting everything. It means designing the system around how the household actually uses power. A slightly slower overnight EV charge, for example, may meet the owner's needs without requiring a larger connection.

The goal is not to avoid an upgrade at all costs. It is to invest only where the evidence shows that an upgrade is necessary or offers worthwhile long-term value.

What should be assessed first?

Before deciding, an electrician should look beyond the proposed appliance and review:

the present supply arrangement and phase configuration

the ratings of the service protection, mains, and main switch

the size, condition, length, and route of the mains

existing and planned electrical loads

voltage drop, load diversity, and opportunities for load management

the switchboard, earthing, protection, and distribution

the capacity available from the local electricity network

Where the connection itself needs to change, the project may also require coordination with the lines company, electricity retailer, metering provider, network-approved contractor, or electrical inspector. Cost and timing can vary considerably with access, trenching, cable routes, and network requirements.
