What Does It Cost to Make a Home Electrically Future Ready?
For many Dunedin homes, the electrical work needed to create a Future Ready foundation will fall somewhere between about $2,000 and $8,000 including GST. A home that is already in good condition may need only targeted preparation, while a constrained home requiring switchboard, mains, distribution, or wiring work can exceed $10,000.
The EV charger, solar system, induction cooktop, heat pump, battery, or other end equipment is normally a separate cost.
There is no single “future-ready upgrade”
Future Ready is not a product you can buy off the shelf. It describes an electrical foundation that is safe, stable, clearly arranged, and capable of supporting the changes you are realistically planning.
That means the cost depends on what is already there. Two similar-looking homes can require very different work. One may have modern protection, sound wiring, spare switchboard capacity, and an adequate supply. The other may have old fuses, limited space, mixed wiring, poor separation between circuits, or a mains connection already close to its practical limit.
The goal is not to install everything now. It is to understand the foundation, correct what is holding it back, and make sensible provision for what is likely to come next.
What different investment levels may achieve
As a broad planning guide:
Under $2,000 may cover targeted improvements where the overall foundation is already sound. This could include minor remedial work, improved labelling, selected protection changes, load monitoring, or creating a practical pathway for a future circuit.
Around $2,000 to $6,000 may cover a more substantial switchboard modernisation, improved circuit-level protection, better fault separation, extra board space, selected circuit work, and provision for planned additions.
Around $6,000 to $15,000 or more may be needed where the work extends beyond the switchboard. This can include mains or supply changes, new submains, additional distribution boards, difficult cable routes, significant remedial work, or coordinating several future loads at once.
What drives the cost?
1. The condition of the existing installation
A modern enclosure does not necessarily mean the whole foundation is modern. Existing wiring, earthing, protection, connections, and previous alterations can all influence the work required.
2. Whether the home needs more capacity
Sometimes the existing supply is sufficient and the better answer is thoughtful circuit design or smart load management. In other homes, the mains, service, or supply genuinely needs to be upgraded.
Establishing this before buying equipment can prevent an expensive surprise later.
3. Access and cable routes
Running a new circuit through an accessible roof space is very different from crossing a finished two-storey home, concrete driveway, or detached garage. Labour, reinstatement, trenching, and coordination can cost more than the equipment itself.
4. How much future provision is worthwhile
More spare capacity is not always better. Good planning allows for the upgrades that are reasonably likely, without paying for an oversized solution that may never be used.
The right answer may be spare switchboard ways, a larger cable installed during a renovation, a conduit to the garage, or a staged plan rather than immediate construction.
The cheapest quote is not always the lowest overall cost
A low-cost switchboard replacement can still leave the home constrained if it does not consider future circuits, available supply, distribution, or the sequence of planned upgrades.
That can lead to a second board replacement, repeated cable work, or compromises when solar, an EV charger, induction cooking, or another high-demand appliance is added.
