What Steps Should I Take to Make My Home's Electrical System Safer and More Resilient?
Start by understanding the condition of your existing wiring, checking your circuit protection and addressing any faults. Then consider how your home uses electricity, how widely a fault could interrupt power, and what you would need during an outage.
A sensible plan puts safety first and builds resilience around the way your household actually lives.
Why the order matters
A home can have new appliances, solar panels or a modern-looking switchboard while still having electrical issues elsewhere. Equally, an older home does not automatically need everything replaced.
For a Dunedin home, the useful question is: what needs attention now, and which improvements will make the biggest practical difference?
1. Establish the condition of your electrical foundation
Ask a licensed electrician to assess the switchboard, accessible wiring, earthing and signs of deterioration or previous alterations. Explain any recurring problems and share documentation from earlier work.
Be clear about the scope. A visual review can identify concerns and guide the next step, but it cannot confirm the condition of every concealed cable. Further inspection or electrical testing may be needed.

2. Check what protection each circuit has
Different protective devices perform different jobs.
Fuses and standard circuit breakers protect against overloads and short circuits. RCDs detect current leaking from its intended path and provide additional protection against electric shock. An RCBO combines these functions in one device.
Ask which circuits have RCD protection, particularly where older and newer electrical work meet. Do not assume that one device with a test button protects every circuit.
Individual RCBOs can also help limit disruption. Giving each circuit its own protection can reduce the number of circuits affected by a fault, compared with grouping several circuits under one RCD. Upstream faults or protective devices can still interrupt more of the home.

3. Make sure demand suits the wiring and supply
List your major electrical loads, including heating, hot water, cooking and EV charging. Add anything you expect to install later.
Your electrician can assess the demand likely to occur at the same time, alongside circuit capacity and the incoming supply. Spare spaces in a switchboard do not, by themselves, mean spare electrical capacity.
Depending on the findings, the answer might be a dedicated circuit, load management or a supply upgrade. Planning before buying equipment helps avoid repeated work.

4. Decide what needs to keep working during a power cut
Start with your essentials: refrigeration, selected lights, communications equipment and any other household priorities. Then decide how long you would want them supported.
Standard grid-connected solar normally shuts down when the grid fails. Having panels, or even a battery, does not automatically mean backup power is available. The system needs compatible equipment and a properly designed backup arrangement.
Ask the installer to explain which circuits will operate, the maximum combined load and the expected running time. Supplying selected essentials can be more practical than trying to operate every appliance. Solar and backup power explained.
Keep torches and charged power banks available as well. If someone depends on electricity for medical equipment, arrange a specific outage plan with their healthcare provider and electricity retailer.
5. Keep the system understandable and maintained
Have circuit labels checked so they accurately describe what each circuit supplies. Keep access to the switchboard clear and retain the relevant certificates, test results and equipment instructions after electrical work.

When should you get advice?
Arrange an assessment if the wiring history is unclear, protection is uncertain, circuits repeatedly trip, or you are planning a substantial new electrical load.
