RCD vs Surge Protector: What’s the Difference?
An RCD helps reduce the risk of electric shock from current leaking to earth. A surge protector helps protect electrical equipment from brief voltage spikes. They perform different jobs, so having one does not mean your home has the protection provided by the other.
For a Dunedin home with appliances, heating, computers and other electronics, both may have a place. The starting point is understanding what protection already exists and where any gaps remain.
What does an RCD do?
An RCD, or residual current device, monitors the balance between the current flowing out through a circuit and the current returning.
If enough current takes an unintended path, such as through a damaged appliance to earth, the RCD detects the imbalance and quickly disconnects the supply. This can reduce the risk of a serious or fatal electric shock.
However, an RCD does not prevent every type of electric shock, and it does not make damaged wiring or appliances safe to keep using. WorkSafe’s RCD guidance explains these limitations.
RCD protection can be provided at the switchboard, at certain power points or through a portable device. Its coverage depends on where it is installed and which circuits or equipment it supplies. Seeing one RCD in the switchboard does not establish that every circuit is protected.
What does a surge protector do?
A surge protective device, often called an SPD, limits brief increases in voltage that could damage connected equipment.
These spikes can result from events such as nearby lightning or switching in the electricity network. Switching electrical equipment within a building can also produce transients.
A correctly selected and installed SPD helps limit the voltage reaching equipment by diverting surge current. It does not provide the earth-leakage protection of an RCD. Phoenix Contact’s surge protection guide explains how these brief voltage disturbances occur.
Surge protection also has limits. Standard SPDs are designed for brief transients, not as a remedy for sustained high voltage or every supply problem. Where do circuit breakers and RCBOs fit?
A standard circuit breaker has another job: protecting a circuit against excessive current caused by an overload or short circuit.
An RCBO combines circuit-breaker and RCD functions in one device. It provides overload, short-circuit and residual-current protection for the circuit it serves.
That combination does not automatically include surge protection. A switchboard fitted with RCBOs may still need separate SPDs where surge protection is appropriate. PDL’s circuit protection overview distinguishes these device functions.
This is why “the switchboard has safety switches” is only the beginning of the conversation. The useful question is which protective functions are present, and what they cover.
Is a surge-protected power board enough?
A plug-in surge protector can provide additional protection for the equipment connected to it, such as a television or computer. It does not provide whole-home coverage or protect appliances connected elsewhere.
It also does not provide RCD protection unless that function is specifically built into the product. An overload reset button is not proof that a power board contains an RCD.
Switchboard surge protection and protection close to sensitive equipment can form a coordinated arrangement. Device selection, installation and the home’s earthing all matter, so the approach should suit the property. Phoenix Contact describes coordinated protection here.
When should you get advice?
It is worth asking a licensed electrician to review the existing arrangement if you are unsure which circuits have RCD protection, are planning a switchboard upgrade, or want to protect valuable fixed appliances and electronics.
Start with the condition of the wiring, earthing and circuit protection. Then consider surge protection alongside any other justified improvements. Adding an SPD cannot compensate for missing shock protection or deteriorated wiring.
If an RCD repeatedly trips, or equipment is behaving unusually, have the cause investigated. Do not assume a surge protector will solve it. Leave switchboard covers and internal checks to an electrician.
What should you take away?
RCDs and surge protectors are complementary protections. One helps reduce electric shock risk; the other helps limit surge damage to equipment. Neither replaces sound wiring, suitable circuit breakers or a properly assessed electrical foundation.
