The short answer is that most homes do not automatically need three-phase power.

A well-designed single-phase supply can often support heat pumps, induction cooking, hot water, solar and an EV charger. What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase power?

Most New Zealand homes have a single-phase electricity supply. This provides one active electrical phase to the switchboard, from which the home’s circuits are supplied.

Three-phase power provides three active phases. Electrical loads can be distributed across them, potentially allowing the property to support more demand and operate equipment designed specifically for three-phase power.

It does not mean that every appliance receives more power. Ordinary lights, sockets and household appliances still operate from individual single-phase circuits. The difference is in how the overall electrical demand can be distributed across the home.

When might three-phase power be useful?

1. You want faster EV charging

Most EV owners can comfortably recharge at home using a single-phase charger, particularly when the vehicle is parked overnight.

Three-phase power may become useful if you want an 11 kW or 22 kW charger, provided the vehicle itself can accept that charging rate. It may also be worth considering if the property will have multiple EVs or two chargers operating together.

However, faster charging is not always necessary. The average distance driven each day, the vehicle’s onboard charger and the time available for overnight charging should all be considered first.

A smart charger with load management can also adjust its output when the home is using more power elsewhere. In some homes, this can provide reliable EV charging without requiring a three-phase upgrade.

2. Several high-demand appliances may operate together

A modern home might include:

  • Induction cooking

  • Multiple heat pumps

Having these appliances does not automatically mean three-phase power is required. The important question is how much electricity they may demand at the same time.

If you are planning a substantial home workshop, pool system, large water pump or other specialised equipment, check its electrical requirements before purchasing it. Discovering that equipment requires three-phase power after it arrives can lead to delays and unexpected costs.

4. You are planning a major renovation or additional dwelling

A large renovation, substantial extension or additional dwelling can significantly change the property’s electrical demand.

Even if three-phase power is not required immediately, it may be worth investigating while other work is being planned. Upgrading the supply can be much easier if trenching, meter relocation, switchboard modernisation or driveway work is already taking place.

Understanding the likely long-term demand early can prevent finished areas from having to be disturbed again later.

Does three-phase power automatically give me more capacity?

Not necessarily.

The usable capacity of a home depends on more than the number of phases. The network connection, service fuse, consumer mains, metering, switchboard and circuit distribution all need to be suitable.

A property could have a constrained single-phase supply, but it could also have a three-phase connection that still requires other work before supporting a major new load.
