Do I Need Surge Protection?
The short answer is that surge protection is not essential for every home, but it is increasingly worth considering.
Modern homes contain more sensitive electronics than ever before. Heat pumps, induction cooktops, televisions, computers, smart appliances, solar inverters and EV chargers can all be vulnerable to sudden voltage spikes. Surge protection helps reduce the chance of those spikes causing expensive damage.
What is an electrical surge?
An electrical surge is a brief increase in voltage within your home’s electrical system.
Some surges originate outside the home, such as those caused by nearby lightning or switching events on the electricity network. Others can be generated within the property as larger electrical equipment switches on or off.
Most surges are over very quickly, but they can still place stress on electronic components. A significant surge may cause immediate failure. Smaller repeated surges can sometimes contribute to equipment wearing out earlier.
A power cut, voltage fluctuation and electrical surge are not necessarily the same thing. If lights flicker or appliances regularly reset, that may indicate a different supply or installation issue that should be investigated.
What does surge protection actually do?
A surge protection device, often called an SPD, is usually installed inside the main switchboard.
When it detects a sudden rise in voltage, the device helps divert the excess energy through the home’s earthing system. This limits the voltage reaching connected equipment and reduces the likelihood of damage.
It is important to understand that surge protection reduces risk. It does not make a home completely immune to lightning or guarantee that every connected appliance will survive every electrical event.
Surge protection also serves a different purpose from circuit breakers and RCDs. Circuit breakers protect wiring from overloads and short circuits, while RCDs provide protection against certain electric shock risks. Each device deals with a different part of electrical protection.
When is surge protection worth considering?
1. Your home contains valuable electronics
It does not take long for the value of connected equipment to add up. Computers, televisions, heat pumps, smart appliances and home automation systems can be costly to repair or replace.
Surge protection can provide another layer of defence for these appliances.
2. You are adding solar, battery storage or an EV charger
These technologies rely heavily on power electronics. Solar inverters, battery systems and EV charging equipment can represent a significant investment.
Surge protection should be considered as part of the overall electrical design rather than added as an afterthought. Depending on the system, protection may need to be coordinated across the switchboard, solar equipment and other connected services.
3. Your switchboard is already being modernised
A switchboard modernisation is a sensible time to consider surge protection. The electrician can assess the available space, earthing arrangement and existing protective devices while planning the new board.
Including surge protection during this work is usually simpler than returning later to modify a crowded switchboard.
4. Your location or electricity supply increases the exposure
Homes supplied by overhead lines, properties in exposed locations and homes that experience frequent electrical disturbances may have a stronger case for surge protection.
The right solution still depends on the property. Surge exposure is only one part of the decision.
Is a surge-protected plug board enough?
A quality surge-protected plug board can provide useful protection for the equipment connected directly to it. However, it only protects those particular outlets and appliances.
Switchboard-mounted surge protection provides broader protection across the home’s electrical circuits. In some situations, layered protection may be appropriate, with a device at the switchboard and additional point-of-use protection for particularly sensitive equipment.
Equipment connected through data, communications or other external cabling may also require separate consideration. Protecting the power supply alone does not necessarily cover every possible path into the home.
Surge protection works best as part of a sound foundation
Installing an SPD should not distract from more fundamental issues within the electrical system.
Its performance depends on correct selection, installation and earthing. If the switchboard is outdated, overcrowded or has other protection deficiencies, those issues should be understood at the same time.
A registered electrician should consider:
The condition and arrangement of the switchboard
The home’s earthing system
The type of electricity supply
Existing solar, battery or EV equipment
Planned future electrical upgrades
The appropriate type and rating of surge protection
The device should also remain accessible so its condition indicator can be checked and the unit replaced if it reaches the end of its service life.
