Will Solar and a Home Battery Keep My Power On During an Outage?
Solar panels on their own will not usually keep a grid-connected home powered during an outage. Solar and a home battery can keep selected circuits running, and some systems can support much of the home, but only when backup operation has been designed into the complete system.
Simply having panels and a battery does not automatically guarantee backup power.
Why solar normally switches off when the grid goes down
A standard grid-connected solar system is designed to stop supplying power during a network outage. This prevents the system from sending electricity back into lines that should be de-energised while faults are located or repairs are completed.
That means your roof may be in full sun while the power inside your home is still off.
To continue operating independently, the home needs equipment that can safely disconnect it from the grid and create a stable local supply. This is often described as backup operation or islanding.
A battery and backup power are not the same thing
A home battery can be installed mainly to store surplus solar energy for use later in the day. In that arrangement, it may help reduce the amount of electricity you buy from the grid without necessarily powering the home during an outage.
Backup usually requires a compatible inverter, appropriate isolation or changeover equipment, and a suitable switchboard arrangement. It may cover essential circuits or most of the home, within the system’s limits.
If outage protection matters to you, it should appear clearly in the design and quote. Do not assume it is included because a battery is listed.
What will stay powered?
The most useful backup system is not always the one that tries to run everything. It is the one designed around what your household genuinely needs during an outage.
Typical priorities might include:
the fridge and freezer
selected lighting
internet equipment
a few general power outlets
a garage door or other important household equipment
possibly a modest heating load, if the system has been sized for it
Large loads such as an EV charger, electric hot water cylinder, oven, spa pool or high-capacity heating system can use stored energy quickly. They may also demand more power at one moment than the battery inverter can provide. Those loads may need to be excluded, limited or actively managed while the grid is unavailable.
Battery capacity and battery power are different. Capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours, indicates how much usable energy can be stored. Power, measured in kilowatts, indicates how much the battery can supply at one time. Both matter when deciding what backup will actually feel like in everyday use.
How long will the battery last?
There is no single answer. Backup time depends on:
the battery’s usable capacity
its state of charge when the outage begins
which appliances are operating
the system’s power limits
whether solar can continue generating and recharge the battery while isolated from the grid
the weather, season and time of day
In Dunedin, shorter winter days and lower winter solar production deserve particular attention. A system that performs comfortably through a sunny summer afternoon may behave very differently during an overnight outage or a run of overcast winter days.
Reserve settings also matter. Some households keep part of the battery charged for outages instead of using all available energy to reduce evening grid use.
Start with the home’s electrical foundation
Backup power connects into the electrical system you already have. Before equipment is selected, it is worth understanding the condition and layout of the switchboard, existing protection, available space, circuit distribution, earthing arrangements and any future demand you are planning.
This becomes especially important if the home is also moving towards an EV, induction cooking, additional heat pumps or other high-demand technology. The best solution should coordinate solar, storage, backup priorities and future electrical demand rather than treating each addition as a separate job.
A few useful questions to ask before accepting a solar and battery quote are:
Does the proposal include outage backup, or only battery storage?
Which circuits will remain powered?
What are the battery’s usable capacity and continuous power output?
Can the solar panels continue operating and recharge the battery during an outage?
Is switchover automatic, and how will the system be tested?
What switchboard or protection work is included?
When is a proper review worthwhile?
