What Happens When Too Many Circuits Share One RCD?
When several circuits share one RCD, a leakage fault on any of them can disconnect every circuit in the group. The RCD is not necessarily being overloaded by normal household demand. It is monitoring the combined leakage across all the circuits it protects.
The more circuits and appliances grouped behind one RCD, the greater the potential for widespread outages, unexplained tripping and difficult fault-finding.
RCDs and circuit breakers perform different jobs
A circuit breaker protects the wiring against excessive current caused by an overload or short circuit. An RCD monitors whether the current leaving through the active conductor is returning through the neutral conductor.
If some current is taking an unintended path, such as through damaged equipment or towards earth, the RCD disconnects the supply.
In some switchboards, one RCD sits alongside several circuit breakers. Each circuit still has its own circuit breaker, but the RCD watches all the circuits in that group together.
Small amounts of leakage can combine
Many modern appliances contain electronic controls, filters and power supplies that can produce a small amount of normal background leakage.
One appliance may not cause a problem. However, when numerous appliances across several circuits share one RCD, their background leakage is combined. That can leave less margin before the RCD operates.
A damp outdoor fitting, ageing appliance or intermittent fault may then be enough to trip the entire group. This is sometimes described as nuisance tripping, but repeated RCD operation should not simply be dismissed or continually reset. The cause still needs to be understood.
One fault can affect a large part of the home
Imagine that the kitchen sockets, laundry, hallway lighting and several bedrooms all share one RCD. A fault in an outdoor appliance could disconnect all of them at once.
You may lose lighting, refrigeration, internet equipment and multiple rooms even though the actual problem is confined to one circuit.
The RCD has still performed its protective function. The weakness is in how widely the consequences are distributed.
Good circuit separation helps ensure one problem does not unnecessarily remove power from a large part of the home. It is particularly important when considering lighting, refrigeration, heating, communications equipment and other loads that would be inconvenient to lose together.
Fault-finding becomes more difficult
When one RCD protects several circuits, the switchboard may only show which group has tripped. It does not immediately reveal which circuit, fitting or appliance caused it.
Finding the fault can involve isolating each circuit, unplugging appliances, completing electrical testing and trying to reproduce an intermittent problem. The more circuits included in the group, the larger the search becomes.
This can be especially frustrating when the RCD trips only occasionally, perhaps during wet weather or when a particular combination of appliances is operating.
Does a shared RCD mean the switchboard is unsafe?
Not automatically.
Many existing Dunedin homes have switchboards where several circuits share an RCD. The arrangement may reflect when the switchboard was installed or modernised. Newer requirements do not automatically mean every older installation must immediately be replaced, provided it remains electrically safe.
What matters is whether the RCDs operate correctly, suit the connected loads and provide sensible separation across the home. The condition of the wiring, neutral arrangement, circuit labelling and overall switchboard capacity also need to be considered.
The number of RCDs alone does not provide the full answer.
Why individual RCBO protection can be better
An RCBO combines circuit-breaker and RCD protection for an individual circuit.
When each circuit has its own RCBO, a leakage fault will usually disconnect only the affected circuit. This makes the source easier to identify and leaves the rest of the home operating.
It also separates the background leakage produced by appliances across different circuits instead of combining it under one shared device.
However, modernisation is not simply a matter of replacing devices. The correct type and rating must be selected for the connected equipment, and the switchboard needs enough physical capacity for the new arrangement. Existing wiring and circuits should also be tested before deciding what is appropriate.
When is it worth having the arrangement reviewed?
A closer look is worthwhile if:
One RCD trip disconnects a large part of the home
RCDs operate repeatedly without an obvious cause
Lighting and several important appliances are lost together
The switchboard has unclear labels or mixed generations of protection
You are planning an EV charger, induction cooking, solar, heat pumps or other new loads
There is little spare switchboard capacity for additional circuits

One RCD can protect several circuits, but grouping too much beneath it can make the home less resilient. A single fault may cause a wider outage, normal leakage can accumulate, and finding the source of a problem can take longer.
