Is your home asking more from power than your switchboard was built for?

Quite possibly. Many switchboards were designed when household demand meant lighting, a stove, a hot-water cylinder and a relatively small number of power points. Even if the board still appears to work, heat pumps, induction cooking, EV charging, spa pools, solar, batteries and extra living spaces can change what the electrical system is being asked to manage.

The important question is not simply whether the switchboard is old. It is whether the whole electrical foundation remains aligned with how the home is used now and what you plan to add next.

The home may have changed while the switchboard stayed the same

Electrical demand usually grows gradually. One heat pump becomes two. A gas hob is replaced with induction. A portable charger is used for an EV. A garage becomes a workshop or an extra room.

Each change can be reasonable on its own, but the combined effect matters. Older homes around Dunedin may also have had several additions completed by different electricians over many years. That can leave a board that has been extended in stages without anyone stepping back to assess the system as a whole.

“It still works” does not answer every question

A switchboard does not need to be visibly failing before it is worth reviewing. Repeated tripping, flickering lights or a lack of spare space can draw attention to a limitation, but a quiet board is not automatically proof that everything is well aligned.

The board is responsible for distributing power and housing important protective devices. Its suitability depends on more than the number of switches on the front. The available supply, circuit sizes, protection arrangement, condition, earthing and the way large loads interact all influence whether the foundation is appropriate.

This is why an electrician cannot reliably judge the whole situation from a photograph of the switchboard alone.

Look at the five parts of the electrical foundation

A useful review considers five connected areas:

Capacity

Can the incoming supply and main equipment support the realistic combination of loads the household may use at the same time? The total of every appliance rating is not the whole calculation, but neither should new demand be added by assumption.

Protection

Are people, circuits and equipment protected in a way that suits the installation? Older protection may not provide the same fault separation or coverage expected in a modern home.

Distribution

Are circuits arranged clearly, or have too many areas and appliances accumulated on shared circuits? Good distribution helps the system operate predictably and makes faults easier to isolate.

Condition

Are the board, connections and related components in sound condition? Heat damage, deterioration, improvised alterations or poor labelling can change the priority of the work.

Future Ready

Is there a sensible pathway for the additions you are considering, or will each new project force another round of changes? Planning headroom now can help avoid paying twice later.

A replacement switchboard is not always the complete answer

Installing a modern board can improve protection, layout and clarity, but it does not automatically increase the capacity of the incoming supply or change the condition of every circuit in the home.

Sometimes the right answer is a switchboard modernisation. Sometimes it is better load management, a dedicated circuit, changes to distribution, a mains upgrade or a staged combination of work. In other homes, the existing foundation may already be suitable.

The value is in identifying the actual constraint before deciding on the solution.

When is a proper assessment worthwhile?

It makes sense to obtain a broader electrical assessment when you are planning EV charging, induction cooking, additional heat pumps, solar, a home battery, a spa pool, a renovation or a secondary dwelling. It is also worthwhile when the installation has an unclear history, limited labelling, repeated trips, flickering under load, unusual warmth, buzzing or a burning smell.

Do not remove switchboard covers or investigate live equipment yourself. If there is unusual heat, noise, odour or persistent tripping, arrange for a licensed electrician to assess it promptly.
