Not necessarily. A switchboard upgrade and a rewire address different parts of the same electrical system. If the circuits throughout the home are sound, suitable and test well, a switchboard upgrade may be enough. If the wiring itself is deteriorated, damaged, poorly altered or no longer suitable, partial or full rewiring may also be needed.

A new switchboard does not renew the wiring

The switchboard is where power is distributed and the home’s circuits are protected. Upgrading it can improve protection, fault separation, circuit labelling, space for future additions and the overall organisation of the electrical system.

But every cable leaving that board still runs through the walls, ceilings and floors. Replacing the switchboard does not change the condition of those cables, correct poor connections elsewhere, add missing earthing to a circuit or undo questionable alterations made over the years.

The reverse is also true. An old switchboard does not automatically mean every circuit in the house needs to be replaced. The board may be outdated while much of the wiring beyond it remains serviceable.

When a switchboard upgrade may be enough

A switchboard-only upgrade may be reasonable when the existing wiring is an appropriate type, is in good condition and produces satisfactory test results. The earthing arrangement should be sound, the circuits should be sensibly distributed, and there should be no significant evidence of heat damage, deterioration or poorly executed additions.

The proposed use of the home matters too. Wiring that has supported the house until now may still need closer consideration if you are planning induction cooking, more heat pumps, EV charging, solar, a home battery or an extension.

The decision is not simply whether the current lights and sockets work. It is whether the electrical foundation is safe, stable and suitable for how the home is expected to operate.

When rewiring becomes more likely

Rewiring becomes more likely when inspection or testing identifies issues beyond the switchboard. These may include:

  • Older cable insulation that has become brittle or deteriorated

  • Circuits without the earthing needed for the fittings they supply

  • Unsatisfactory electrical test results

  • Heat damage, damaged cables or unreliable connections

  • Years of additions that have left circuits difficult to trace or poorly arranged

  • Existing wiring that cannot be safely adapted for planned work

Visible age alone is not enough to make the decision. Some problems can be seen in accessible roof spaces, under floors, at fittings or inside the switchboard, while others are revealed through testing. Concealed wiring cannot always be visually inspected without opening the building, which is why evidence from several sources matters.

It may not be an all-or-nothing decision

Many homes do not fit neatly into “switchboard only” or “complete rewire.”

The right scope may be a new switchboard combined with replacement of selected circuits. For example, sound socket circuits might remain while older lighting wiring, a compromised kitchen circuit or an unsuitable garage supply is replaced. A planned renovation may also create a sensible opportunity to renew wiring in the areas already being opened.

This staged approach can preserve what is sound while correcting what is Constrained. It also reduces the chance of paying to modernise the switchboard now, only to discover later that the circuit layout prevents the next upgrade from being completed cleanly.

How the right scope is determined

A proper assessment should consider the whole electrical foundation:

  1. Condition: What wiring types are present, and what condition are they in?

  2. Protection: Does the switchboard provide appropriate protection and fault separation?

  3. Distribution: Are circuits clearly identified and sensibly arranged?

  4. Capacity: Can the supply and circuits support present and planned demand?

  5. Future Ready: Can likely additions be made without avoidable repeated work?

This is especially useful in older Dunedin homes, where renovations and electrical additions may have occurred in several stages under different owners. The newest-looking part of the system does not necessarily tell you what is happening everywhere else.

The takeaway

Do not begin by choosing between a switchboard upgrade and a rewire. Begin by establishing the condition and suitability of the system you already have.

If the wiring is sound, a well-planned switchboard upgrade may be all that is required. If issues are found beyond the board, the evidence should show whether targeted circuit replacement or wider rewiring is justified.
