Does My Home Have the Right Safety Devices, and Do They Still Work?

Possibly, but looking at the switchboard cannot confirm it. The right protection depends on which devices are installed, which circuits they cover, the condition of the wiring and earthing, and whether the devices operate correctly when tested.

An RCD or RCBO with a test button is reassuring. However, its presence does not prove that every circuit is appropriately protected or that the wider electrical foundation is safe.

Safety devices perform different jobs

The devices inside a switchboard may look similar, but they are not interchangeable.

Circuit breakers and fuses protect wiring against excessive current caused by an overload or short circuit. They are primarily there to reduce the risk of cables overheating or becoming damaged.

An RCD monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit. If it detects current leaking somewhere it should not, potentially through a person, it disconnects the supply quickly. An RCBO provides both residual-current protection and overcurrent protection for an individual circuit.

Other parts of the electrical foundation matter too. The main switch provides isolation, while correctly installed earthing and sound wiring help protective devices operate as intended. Surge protection can help protect appliances and electronics from voltage spikes, but it does not replace RCD protection.

The right combination depends on the home, its wiring, the appliances connected to it and how the electrical system has changed over time.

Having an RCD does not confirm complete protection

Many older Dunedin homes have been altered gradually. A switchboard may contain newer RCDs or RCBOs alongside older fuses, shared protection or circuits that were installed under earlier requirements.

Sometimes only certain circuits are protected. In other homes, one RCD may serve several circuits, meaning a single fault can disconnect a large part of the house. There may also be sub-boards, additions or previous electrical work that are not clearly represented by the labels at the main switchboard.

This does not automatically mean the home is unsafe. It does mean that the presence of one or two modern devices is not enough to understand the overall level of protection.

A proper review should establish:

  • Which circuits have RCD or RCBO protection

  • Whether the protection is appropriate for those circuits

  • How the circuits are distributed between devices

  • Whether the switchboard labelling is accurate

  • Whether the wiring, earthing and connections support the protection provided

What does the test button tell you?

The test button on an RCD or RCBO provides a simple way to check whether its internal tripping mechanism responds.

Follow the instructions printed on the device or provided by its manufacturer. WorkSafe recommends testing switchboard RCDs every six months. Pressing the button will disconnect power to the circuits it protects, so first make sure it is safe to interrupt appliances, computers, medical equipment and other important loads.

The device should trip and should then reset normally. If it does not trip, cannot be reset, feels damaged or behaves differently from usual, arrange for a licensed electrician to investigate it.

Never remove the switchboard cover or attempt to access the wiring behind it.

The test button is only one part of verification

A successful button test does not confirm which circuits are protected. It also does not measure the device’s operating time, confirm that it trips at the appropriate current, or verify the condition and correct connection of the circuit.

Instrument testing is required to answer those questions. The Electrical Workers Registration Board includes RCD operation alongside tests for matters such as earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and correct circuit connections in its electrical verification guidance.

This is an important distinction. An RCD is an additional layer of protection, not a substitute for compliant wiring, correct earthing and proper testing.

When should the protection be reviewed?

An electrical review is worthwhile if:

  • Your switchboard has older fuses or no visible RCD test buttons

  • You do not know which circuits are protected

  • One RCD appears to control much of the home

  • Circuit labels are missing, unclear or inaccurate

  • A test button does not trip the device

  • You experience repeated or unexplained tripping

  • The home has had several renovations or additions

  • You are preparing for an EV charger, induction cooking, solar, heating or further renovation

  • The switchboard is crowded and has little room for future protection devices

Any electric shock, tingling fitting, burning smell, visible heat damage or water entry should be treated more urgently. Stop using the affected circuit where it is safe to do so and contact a licensed electrician.
